7 Household Items You Shouldn’t Bother Buying New

Inspect the mirror properly. Look at it closely and see if there are any visible cracks. If it’s intact, all you have to do is clean it up a little, get those streaks off, and you’re good to go.

As much as you can you should get items that you “buy for life”. Namely, there are certain products, appliances, pieces of furniture, or just home objects in general that you don’t have to buy new. Instead, they have withstood the test of time, and are as good, if not better, than before. Indeed, perhaps you want to save a buck, and actually care about your budget. On the other hand, maybe you want to get the most out of your purchase, with price being second. Whatever the case may be, you will get the same results with the household items below.

Mirrors are fragile, they are either totally broken, or pretty much intact. You can pretty much be certain that people selling it on local markets simply don’t want to carry them somewhere else. Namely, moving is pretty annoying by itself, and there packing a mirror specifically to have it carried is even more annoying. So is much easier to just sell it at a yard sale, or post an ad online.

Cutlery and kitchen sets

Don’t be scared of getting used flatware. As long as you wash it thoroughly once or twice, you will not have any problems as bacteria is concerned. Ad trust us, cutlery and plates are made specifically to be durable. So unless you see significant cracks or damage, there is no reason not to get some used.

Similar to mirrors, there is no real middle ground between a broken plate and a brand new one. Sure, the new one may seem nicer, and have fewer scratches, but rarely will you see a partially cracked plate. They may seem chipped, but you can just save up some money and buy fine china to bring out for guests exclusively.

You’d be shocked how often you can get blenders in perfect working condition online. Most likely people just get them thinking they will change their diets and habits, use them regularly for a week, and then forget about them. You can find lots in near-mint condition cheap.

Just always check twice when looking at appliances like these. A faulty, heavily damaged blender can cause severe injuries. If you bought it a store, you can always get a product liability claim going, but that just doesn’t work for things you bought second hand.

Espresso machines

The same with blenders essentially – people buy espresso machines hoping they will really get used to them, and then realize they just don’t feel like cleaning them, or that they prefer having one in a coffee shop. Perhaps they just figure out they like regular coffee. Whatever the reason may be, you should know that you can find lots of these in great condition online.

Old-school appliances

Old-school appliances
We mentioned blenders and espresso machines, but even old-school appliances for sale can be bought second hand, being better than new, modern versions. Namely, if you don’t take into account various buttons, digital screens and the like, there is not that much difference between and old and a modern fridge. And they may actually be better because they were built to last, and didn’t use flimsy, modern electronic components.

Indeed, repairs are just part of this DIY, buy-it-for-life attitude. It seems older appliances are simply easier to repair, as long as you can get the parts.

Bookcases and shelves

Shelves, bookcases- these are all just a couple of boards and pieces of wood set together. Just buy some at your first yard sale, or go online, and inspect it. If it seems sturdy and sound, get one set. It may seem ugly, but that is probably just scratches. Some varnish and a new coat of paint, and it will look better than new.

The same goes for shelves, shoe racks, you may even get some specialized racks that would cost a fortune in a regular store. Just stay curious and dig for hidden treasure.

Bed frames

Bed frame are made to be sturdy. This may be one of the better saves on the list. New beds are very expensive, but the greatest amount of comfort is gained through the matters. So, if you get a cheap, and sturdy frame, all you need then is a mattress.

As long as there are no nails poking out, and if its seems structurally sound (no cracks or significant bending) you’re pretty much good to go,

And there you have it folks, a couple of things that you can buy for life, or get the same quality at any second hand shop. The quality of this stuff will not be any different than if you bought it at the store. Some things simply don’t have to be bought new, and there is no point in spending money on them at a store.
