Excerpt from book: HISTORY And Trials Of A Pioneer Family, And The Experiences Following An Ill-timed, Improperly Drafted And Ille- Gally Witnessed Last Will And Testament. On the 28th day of July, 1840, there arrived in America, from Bavaria, a family consisting- of Conrad Hofen, his wife, Christena, and four children, the eldest six years of age. This family, like many others, migrated westward. Arriving in the city of Buffalo, New York, Mr. Hofen secured employment in a tannery, and for the term of two years remained there and in that time accumulated enough money to provide provisions, apparel and wagon-train transportation to Toledo, Ohio, where a stop of eight months was made. During that time Mr. Hofen, by careful, diligent labor, again saved money sufficient to provide transportation by ox team to the village of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Here he secured employment at the grist mill, and after a few years the accumulated savings were invested as first payment for an eighty acre tract of land. Then A Pioneer. it was that Mr. Hofen and wife first felt the actual responsibility of pioneer life, with wolves, deer and wild cats for their nearest neighbors. The real work of renewed existence was begun, he remaining at work at the mill, while his wife exhibited the substantial help that only could come from one possessed of such robust physique, health and strength, and together they labored for their mutual good. While he worked at the mill, she, with the assistance of the two eldest children, was clearing away wood and timber, carrying and rolling into heaps and piles, and burning the trees she felled and cut up.
